Question & Answer

Q1. What are the five basic operations performed by the computer?
Answer :
The five basic operations a computer performs are input, processing, output, storage, and control.
1. Input: This is the process of entering data and programs into the computer system.
2. Processing: The computer's Central Processing Unit (CPU) executes arithmetic and logical operations to convert the raw input data into useful information.
3. Output: This is the process of producing results from the data for getting useful information.
4. Storage: Computer is used to store data and instructions.
5. Control: The process of input, output, processing and storage is performed under the supervision of a unit called 'Control Unit'.

Q2. Define ALU, CU and CPU.
Answer:
Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU): The major operations performed by the ALU are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, logic and comparison.
Control Unit (CU): The process of input, output, processing and storage is performed under the supervision of a unit called 'Control Unit'.
CPU : The ALU and the CU of a computer system are jointly known as the central processing unit (CPU). You may call CPU as the brain of any computer system.

Q 3. Choose the correct answer.
1. The task of performing arithmetic and logical operations is called:
(i) ALU (ii) editing (iii) storage (iv) Output
Answer : ALU (Processing)

2. The ALU and CU jointly are known as
(i) RAM (ii) ROM (iii) CPU (iv) None of above
Answer : CPU

3. The process of producing results from the data for getting useful information is called:
(i) output (ii) input (iii) processing (iv) storage
Answer : Output

Q 4. Write True or False for the following:
1. Mouse is an output device.
Answer : False
2. OCR stands for Optical Content Reader.
Answer : False
3. LCD Monitor is used in notebook computer.
Answer : True
4. Speed of DOT Matrix Printer is measured in Characters Per Second.
Answer : True
5. Plotters are used to produce high quality drawings and images, such as construction plans for buildings or blueprints for mechanical objects.
Answer : True
6. Operating System (OS) is an Application Software.
Answer : False
7. High level languages are easy to program than low level language.
Answer : True
8. Computer language FORTRAN is used to solve Scientific and Mathematical problems.
Answer : True
9. C is an object oriented programming language.
Answer : False
10. Compiler converts high level languages into machine language.
Answer : True

Q 5. What is a software? Discuss its various categories with the help of diagram.
Answer :
Software: In order to perform any task, you have to give a set of instructions in a particular sequence to the computer. These sets of instructions are called Programs.
System Software: This foundational software helps the computer's hardware function correctly.
• Operating Systems (OS): Examples include Windows, Linux, and macOS, which manage computer resources and provide a platform for other software.
• Utility Software: Programs that help maintain and manage the computer system, such as antivirus software or disk cleaners.
Application Software: These are programs designed for end-users to perform specific tasks.
• General Purpose Applications: Software for common tasks, like web browsers (Chrome), media players (VLC Media Player), or office suites (Microsoft Office)
• Customized Applications: Software tailored for a specific business or industry, such as accounting software or payroll systems.

Q. 6. Distinguish between system and application software.
Answer :
System Software Application Software
System softwares are sets of programs. Application software is a set of programs.
System softwares responsible for running the computer. Which are written to perform specific tasks.
System softwares controlling various operations of computer systems and management of computer resources. Application Software is used to manage information of library such as: keeping book details.
Q 7 . Write short notes on:
1.Laser Printer : A laser printer produces high quality print that one normally finds in publishing. It is extremely fast and quiet. Moreover, the operation of a laser printer is easy with automatic paper loading and no messing up of ink ribbons. The fastest laser printer can print up to 200 pages per minute in monochrome (black and white) and up to 100 pages per minute in colour.
2.High level language :Higher level languages are computer independent and programming becomes quite easy and simple.
3.Compiler : The software (set of programs) that reads a program written in high level language and translates it into an equivalent program in machine language is called as Compiler.
4.Plotter :Plotters are designed to produce large drawings or images, such as construction plans for buildings or blueprints for mechanical objects.

Q 8. Write a note on Computer language and its classification.
Answer: every computer language is bound by rules known as SYNTAX of that language. The user is bound by that syntax while communicating with the computer system.
